A quiescent current of 700nA allows for a long time normally open function to help maximise the effectiveness of the above applications.

Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) recently introduced a highly integrated battery management solution that achieves the industry's lowest quiescent current (Iq) with a buck converter that operates at an operating voltage of 1.8V with a quiescent current of only 700nA, which reduces power consumption while maximising battery life. bq25120 features a linear charger, configurableThe bq25120 features a linear charger, configurable low dropout regulator (LDO), load switch, buck converter, pushbutton control, and battery voltage monitor in a single device. The bq25120 can be used whenever the battery voltage range is between 3.6V and 4.65V and the fast charge current is between 5mA and 300mA, allowing wearable and industrial IoT applications to be left on without draining the battery.

Features and Benefits:

Lowest quiescent current of 700nA: Using power-path technology and a low quiescent current buck converter, the bq25120 can be left on at an operating voltage of 1.8V.This allows the host microprocessor, including the TI host microprocessor, Bluetooth® RF, SimpleLink™ Bluetooth Smart CC2640 wireless MCU, to run continuously without drawing power from a "depleted" battery during charging.Designers can maximise battery life thanks to the solution's 50nA standby mode quiescent current.

Highly integrated: the configurable load switch/LDO optimised system switches off rarely used features such as radios and displays, minimising battery consumption. The solution also includes an integrated battery voltage monitor that enables a charge indicator, buck converter and push-button control features.

Industry's Smallest Battery Management Solution: The solution's 2.5mm x 2.5mm wafer chip package (WCSP) allows for a small footprint, making it easy for designers to integrate the device into the latest wearable designs. Additionally, for a more robust solution, designers can use the CC2640 wireless MCU solution, the industry's smallest quad-flat leadless package solution with integrated flash memory for Bluetooth Smart applications.

Precise end-of-charge current as low as 500µA: This feature maximises the amount of power transferred to the battery before the charge cycle is complete, allowing the battery to be externally powered at a more robust full state of charge.

User Flexibility: The bq25120's I2C programming interface enables designers to set key parameters such as battery charger voltage, current, termination thresholds, input current limits, load switching control, flexible timers and reset options.

To integrate additional end-use features, the bq25120 can be used with other devices. Ultra-low quiescent current buck converter, the TPS62743 can be used for additional buck outputs. Boost converters can also be used for display integration. the TPS61046 provides a 12V boost, while the TPS61240, which supports load connectivity, provides a 5V boost for heart rate monitors or small form factor displays.
